Woodbine: Shut It Down wins a new way

Shut It Down, an 11-1 outsider, blew by the rest of the field early in the stretch under Tyler Pizarro to win the $126,200 Frost King Stakes going away at Woodbine on Saturday.

Shut It Down bobbled at the break and got away slowly in the seven-furlong race for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds. Normally a front-runner, he trailed the eight-horse on the backstretch, then loomed into contention on turn.

Shut It Down came six wide into the stretch, and hit the front at the eighth pole before drawing clear to win by 5 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:22.21 and paying $24.20. Wildcat Fashion outran Win and Reign for second, and favored Mean Green was hard-ridden for fourth.

"He was good in the gate, but he broke a little slow," said Pizarro. "I just had to take it from there. There was so much speed, so we had the idea to sit off of it."

Shut It Down earned $75,000 in his first stakes score for owner K.K. Sangara and trainer Lorne Richards.
