Woodbine: Shaws Creek rallies in Plate Trial

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Shaws Creek closed four wide on the far turn en route to a three-quarters of a length score in the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial Stakes, a prep for the June 23 Queen's Plate at Woodbine.

Shaws Creek ($10.10) raced in a stalking position under Jake Barton, as outsider Aspen Ridge led through moderate fractions. Anglian Prince raced prominently along the inside, and made the lead at the top of the stretch, before Shaws Creek overtook him at the sixteenth pole.

Classic Mike, part of the favored entry with Wolverine, was blocked early in the stretch, but was charging late after finding room and edged Anglian Prince by a neck for second. The final time over a fast track was 1:52.38.

"He did everything I asked him to do," said Barton. "He was laying comfortable [early]. I might have asked him to kick on a little prematurely, because he started to wander a bit, but when a horse came up to him, he dug back in."

Shaws Creek, trained by John Ross for the Jam Jar Racing Stable, earned $102,240 of the $170,400 purse.

* Favored Lush Soldier ($6.80) rallied wide to overhaul 35-1 shot Amy's Falcon in deep stretch to win the supporting feature, the $108,800 Alywow Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
