ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A pair of 2-1 shots, Roxy Gap and Atlantic Hurricane, staged an exciting stretch duel in Sunday’s $187,000 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine, with Roxy Gap coming out on top in the Grade 3 turf sprint for fillies and mares.
Roxy Gap made the lead at the head of the stretch in the six-furlong dash and then dug in gamely to prevail by a half-length in 1:09.18. Jenny’s So Great, who won this race last year, finished 2 1/4 lengths behind favored Atlantic Hurricane in third in a field reduced to six with the scratch of Honey Chile.
Patrick Husbands rode Roxy Gap for trainer Mark Casse, a combination that won two stakes here Saturday.
“I didn’t want anybody to get the first run on me turning for home,” Husbands said. “She battled the whole way down the lane.”
Roxy Gap ($6.20) banked $120,000 in her third stakes score this year for Melnyk Racing Stable.

LORD CHELSIE has been away since February but he has speed and the rail, and given the general lack of pace in this opener he should be able to take advantage of this pace advantage, as long as he breaks alertly and outruns OMINOUS THOMAS for the lead; past success over this strip adds to the appeal. OMINOUS THOMAS failed to make the lead in a shorter race that was loaded with speed last time; back at six furlongs today, and this is a much better race flow for him.
