Blowout wins by Blazin Britches and Tequila Monday and a huge recovery after a break by division leader Shartin N were the headlines after the two C$35,000 Roses Are Red Stakes eliminations for pacing mares on Saturday at Woodbine Park Mohawk. The complexion of the first elimination definitely changed when Shartin N (Tim Tetrick) made a break early on the first turn and had to drop all the way back to last.  Taking advantage of her mistake was Blazin Britches (David Miller), who took the lead at the 27 2/5 opening quarter, then crawled to the half in just 56 1/5. Blazin Britches picked up the tempo around the last bend, getting to three-quarters in 1:24 1/5, and she poured it on from there, reaching the wire 3 1/2 lengths to the good in 1:51 flat.  L A Delight (Yannick Gingras) came on from second-over to finish in the runner-up spot, with Lyons River Pride (Jody Jamieson) third at 114-1. Shartin N, who was last and ten lengths back at three-quarters, rallied to collect fourth, beaten 4 1/4 lengths by Blazin Britches, but she would be placed fifth behind Blue Moon Stride (Corey Callahan) as the judges determined she had caused interference to that foe while off-stride.  Nevertheless, a fifth-place finish was good enough to secure a spot in next Saturday night's final. "I know Timmy's mare running kind of changed the whole complex of the race, but my mare was pretty fired up behind the gate," remarked winning trainer Brian Brown.  "I don't know if David really even intended to leave, but I don't think he had a choice.  I'm surprised she got to the quarter as easy as it was, and then the half that nobody came.  I was thrilled they left her alone because once she clears like that and they leave her alone she will relax.  I think after a couple races where she's back going she'll settle down and he'll be able to go back to driving her the way she needs to be. "We made some adjustments after her first start (a second-place finish at Hoosier after cutting hot fractions), and she was a pretty good today.  I was just a little worried about the gate.  I'm very happy with her.  The post means a lot.  I've just got to get with David and try to figure out some other things to make her a little calmer behind the gate so he can do whatever he wants instead of what she wants." Blazin Britches, the Dan Patch Award winner for top 3-year-old pacing filly last year, is a daughter of Rock N Roll Heaven trained by Brown for owner/breeder Emerald Highlands Farm.  This was her 12th career win, and she has now earned C$560,444.  She was sent off at 6-1 and paid $14.00 to win. In the other elimination Tequila Monday (Brett Miller) moved from second to first past the 27 3/5 opening quarter, putting early pace-setter The Joy Luck Club (Chris Christoforou) back in the pocket.  Tequila Monday hit the half in 55 4/5, and then reached three-quarters in 1:23 3/5 with a first-over Caviart Ally (Andrew McCarthy) spinning her wheels and not threatening. Tequila Monday kept right on going through the lane, scoring a 1 3/4 length victory over The Joy Luck Club, with Nike Franco N (Tetrick) third after a three-hole trip.  Slight favorite Firebby A (Louis-Philippe Roy) was fourth after being hung up second-over in the non-advancing flow, and Artistic Madison made the final with a fifth-place finish at odds of 117-1. "They've got her razor-sharp.  Believe it or not she races better off-the-pace, but they've got her so sharp right now it didn't matter," said Brett Miller.  "She's matured.  There were many times before she would get so hot she would get out of control.  She would go fractions way too fast and get very tired, but now she's matured into a very, very good mare." Hunter Oakes trains Tequila Monday, a 4-year-old American Ideal mare, for owners Northfork Racing Stable and Chuck Pompey.  She visited the winner's circle for the 15th time, and she has put away C$671,222.  She was the 9-5 second choice and returned $5.70 to win. Here is how the field will line up for next Saturday night's C$370,000 final: 1-Nike Franco N 2-Lyons River Pride 3-Tequila Monday 4-Blazin Britches 5-Blue Moon Stride 6-Artistic Madison 7-Shartin N 8-Firebby A 9-L A Delight 10-The Joy Luck Club AE-Pure Country
