Woodbine: Mobil burns 'em late

Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mobil kicked in through the stretch and held off the favored Quiet Dare to win Saturday's $160,500 Queenston Stakes, a prep for the June 22 Queen's Plate at Woodbine.

Mobil had an ideal three-wide stalking trip under Todd Kabel in the seven-furlong race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds. Shipman led the way through fractions of 23.29 seconds for a quarter-mile and 46.86 for a half-mile, while Quiet Dare trailed in the five-horse field.

Mobil dropped back a little on the turn, as Quiet Dare came into contention, but found his best stride in the stretch and prevailed by a length. The final time was 1:24.26. Awesome Action finished another three lengths back in third.

"I was a little concerned on the turn," Kabel said. "My horse fell apart in the middle of the turn. I went from having a ton of horse to having none. I wasn't sure what was wrong with him, but once I got him straightened up in the lane, he switched leads and fired like a real good horse."

Mobil ($5) earned $96,300 for owner Gustav Schickedanz and trainer Mike Keogh.
