ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Magic Broomstick ($9.60) closed strongly under Emma Wilson to take the $153,400 Bessarabian Stakes over a sharp Wyomia at Woodbine Saturday.
With a cold wind at her back, Silent Serenity set honest fractions in the seven-furlong sprint for the fillies and mares. Magic Broomstick bided her time in sixth on the backstretch, and commenced a five-wide rally on the turn before overtaking Wyomia late to score by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:22.29.
Atlantic Hurricane, the 2-1 favorite, finished another neck back in third, after altering course around rivals early in the lane. Actionontwo and Forest Uproar were scratched, reducing the field size to nine.
The Grade 3 Bessarabian was the third consecutive stakes triumph for Magic Broomstick, who banked $90,000 for Sam-Son Farm and trainer Malcolm Pierce. According to Sam-Son's Michael Balaz, it was the 6-year-old mare's final start.
"She'll be going to Kentucky to be bred," said Balaz. "The ideal of this year was to get some stakes wins, which she more than did. She'll be a wonderful addition to our broodmare band."

GHOSTLY APPEAL has been on the sidelines for more than nine months. She'll be hard to deny on the drop from $12,500 N2L to $5,000 N2L if she's ready to roll in her return. WINTER ROCKET made up ground late, but still finished in the rear-half of the pack when she was overmatched against Louisiana-bred $12,500 N2L's in her return from a freshening. She'll be a factor in the exotics on the class drop to open $5,000 N2L. SHE'S BONAFIDE didn't show as much early speed as usual, then rallied to challenge for the lead.
