Woodbine: James Street's Durham Cup victory gives Carroll Grade 3 sweep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - James Street came charging from off a suicidal speed duel to capture the $155,100 Durham Cup Stakes, giving trainer Josie Carroll a sweep of the two Grade 3 stakes on the Sunday Woodbine card.

Delegation, the 3-10 favorite in the six-horse field, battled with 8-1 third choice Alpha Bettor through quick fractions in the nine-furlong event. James Street raced on the outside in fifth on the backstretch, and then rallied through the lane to prevail by a 1 1/4 lengths in 1:50.14.

Alpha Bettor weakened in the stretch, but dug in gamely at the end to finish second by a neck over Awesome Overture. Peyton, So Long George and a tired Delegation completed the order of finish.

Delegation disappointed the bridge-jumpers. James Street returned $14.50, $7 and $11.60 across the board. The other show payoffs were $11.50 and $20.70.

James Street, who collected $90,000 for Melnyk Racing Stable, was one of three winning rides on the card for Patrick Husbands.

“He was enjoying it in behind those horses,” said Husbands. “I wanted to make my move at the right time.”

Carroll also won Sunday’s Grey Stakes with Ami’s Holiday.

Huge race run by Alpha Bettor, and James Street put in a very impressive run and said thank you very much.
