A funeral service will be held Friday for James Joseph Bannon, who died at Toronto's St. Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday at age 84.
Bannon was the father of Jim Bannon, longtime editor and author of the Woodbine Journal and a television commentator for Woodbine. The senior Bannon's selections had been published under the nom de plume "Abernathy" in Woodbine's Thoroughbred program for the last five decades.
The service will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 480 Rathburn Road, Toronto, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Sharelife or a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Making just his second start of the year, Lanson gave notice at Philadelphia that he is about to return to form. He put in a nice uncovered mile and held well to be beaten by less than a length. He returns to the Meadowlands now and catches a decent group that includes possibly the leading player for this year’s Hambletonian. That said, he is as fast or faster than any of these and should be primed for a big effort.
