Woodbine: It's Gail to get grass test on Thursday

Waitinginthewings ran sixth in the Woodbine Oaks.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The unbeaten It’s Gail will test her skills on the grass in Thursday’s seventh race at Woodbine, 1 1/16-mile allowance for Ontario-sired females.

It’s Gail came from 10th to land her debut in a seven-furlong maiden special on Polytrack June 2, for which she got a 55 Beyer Speed Figure. Three weeks later, she won a 1 1/16-mile Ontario-sired allowance on the main track with a solid 71 Beyer Figure.

It’s Gail is by emerging turf sire Niigon, but there’s very little turf breeding on the dam’s side of her pedigree.

Luis Contreras will ride It’s Gail for trainer Bob Tiller, who has been winning at a 21 percent clip at the meet.

There are four other daughters of 2004 Queen’s Plate winner Niigon in the field: Dance With Gretch, Niigon’s Princess, Savethethought, and Waitinginthewings.

Dance With Gretch, who’s also experimenting on the grass, is a half-sister to two turf winners, including minor stakes winner Me the Sea and G T.

Dance With Gretch won 2 of 4 starts last summer at 3. She was a troubled second as the favorite after a long layoff June 1, and was a wide-closing third over a speed-conducive track most recently in another Ontario-sired allowance route.

Leading rider Patrick Husbands retains the mount on Dance With Gretch, who is trained by Abraham Katryan.

Niigon’s Princess has 2 victories from 7 turf starts. She graduated on the turf in June of last year, and went wire to wire in a nonwinners-of-two Ontario-sired allowance a month ago. Expect her to set or press the pace under Emma Wilson.

Savethethought has been an underachiever since taking two straight Ontario-sired routes with Beyer Figures in the low 70s last year. She capped her 2011 campaign with back-to-back seconds as the favorite, and finished a tired sixth behind several of these in her June 1 comeback. Don’t be surprised if jockey Steve Bahen tries to drag her off her usual leading position here.

Waitinginthewings checked in a respectable sixth in the June 3 Woodbine Oaks in just her third career outing. She ran evenly when second while beating Dance With Gretch on June 24.

Like It’s Gail, Waitinginthewings doesn’t possesses much turf breeding on the bottom of her bloodlines.

Burmah Star has yet to duplicate her best form of 2011, when she ran third in the Carotene Stakes during a lucrative campaign. She was overmatched most recently in the Zadracarta Stakes, from which victorious Moment of Majesty exited to finish second in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly.
