His Race to Win, ridden by Eurico Rosa da Silva, wins the Ontario Derby by 2 1/4 lengths Sunday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – His Race to Win, rallying under Eurico Rosa da Silva, outfinished the battling duo of Winning Cause and Pyrite Mountain to capture Sunday’s Grade 3, $171,900 Ontario Derby.

The Ontario Derby, a 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds, was the first stakes win for His Race to Win, a homebred who races for Sam-Son Farm and is trained by Malcolm Pierce.

B E Boston Strong had set the pace, with Sky Commander in closest pursuit, but the backfield went into motion around the final turn, as first Winning Cause and then Pyrite Mountain launched their bids. Meanwhile, His Race to Win was racing on the inside with nowhere to run until da Silva found a seam to burst through en route to a 2 1/4-length victory.

“I was really worried because I had so much horse in the turn and nowhere to go,” da Silva said.

Winning Cause and Pyrite Mountain finished a head apart in second and third, with Sky Commander, B E Boston Strong, and Coastal Breeze completing the order of finish. His Race to Win was timed in 1:50.71, returned $6.30 as the second choice, and keyed a $15.40 exacta and a $18.95 trifecta.
