Five Iron, ridden by Luis Contreras, got his first stakes victory Sunday in the Victoria Park.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Five Iron led all the way to upset Winning Cause, the 1-2 favorite from New York, in Sunday’s $153,300 Victoria Park Stakes at Woodbine.

Five Iron set moderate fractions of 24.87 seconds, 49.15, and 1:12.90 in the 1 1/8-mile route for 3-year-olds. Winning Cause trailed the four-horse field on the backstretch before mounting a three-wide bid on the far turn.

Winning Cause lugged in through the stretch, and Five Iron repelled his challenge while drifting out a little before prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:50.38. Sweet Little Man and Bear Fabulous Son completed the order of finish.

Luis Contreras rode Five Iron for trainer Robbie Martin.

“He was nice and relaxed today,” Contreras said. “I used his speed to be on the lead. I had a lot of horse at the end.”

In a race with no place or show wagering, Five Iron returned $6.90. He collected $93,000 for his first stakes victory for owner Fred Allor.
