Woodbine: Eccentric pulls away

Eccentric ($8.50) overhauled 11-1 shot As Expected in the stretch before drawing away to take the Grade 3, $150,800 Connaught Cup Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.

Eccentric sat four lengths off the lead on the backstretch of the 1 1/16-mile race, while As Expected set moderate fractions over a course labeled yielding. Jockey David Clark angled Eccentric wide for the stretch run, and they hit the front inside the eighth pole en route to a 2 1/4-length victory.

Shoal Water closed for third, and French Beret was a fading sixth in the seven-horse field. Are You Serious and Raw Power were scratched.

Eccentric covered the distance in 1:45.05. He banked $90,000 for owner Gary Tanaka and trainer Roger Attfield, who also saddled the fourth-place finisher, Pellegrino.
