ETOBICOKE, Ontario — A rejuvenated Dixie Strike  defeated 1-2 favorite Tu Endie Wei with an impressive closing run under Patrick Husbands in the $280,000 Selene Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.

After trailing the field early, Dixie Strike  ($9.10) made an eye-catching inside move heading into the far turn in the Grade 3 event for 3-year-old fillies. She collared Tu Endie Wei at the eighth pole before drawing away to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths, in a quick time of 1:43.79 for 1 1/16 miles.

Tu Endie Wei finished a clear second over 13-1 shot Katie Get Excited in the six-horse field.

“I gunned her away [from the gate], and then she wasn’t comfortable,” said Husbands. “I just left her alone, and she got her legs together. She showed me that she was the best today.”

Dixie Strike, who had struggled since her victory in the Feb. 4 Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs, won $180,000 for owner John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse. She looks to be a serious contender for the June 3 Woodbine Oaks and the June 24 Queen’s Plate.
