Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Bear Stable runners Bear Tough Tiger and Bear No Joke ran one-two Sunday at Woodbine in the Grade 3, $157,000 Kennedy Road Stakes.

Favored Essence Hit Man and Something Extra dueled through fast splits of 21.84 and 44.18 in the six-furlong  dash. Something Extra prevailed in the front-end battle before giving way to a stalking Bear No Joke in the stretch, but a wide-closing Bear Tough Tiger was along in time to score by neck in 1:08.77. Something Extra edged out Court of the Realm for third in the nine-horse field.

Justin Stein rode Bear Tough Tiger for Reade Baker, who also trains the runner-up along with eighth-place finisher Fatal Bullet.

“They ran away from him pretty easily and opened up a lengthy lead,” said Stein. “My horse settled into stride, and I was sitting there by myself waiting for the race to develop as we came around the turn. He’s a gutsy horse, and he’s really been improving.”

Bear Tough Tiger ($11.60) earned $90,000 in his first stakes victory.
