Woodbine: Attard has solid pair in Miss Scarlett Road and Total Bliss for allowance feature

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Sid Attard appears to be holding a strong hand in Wednesday’s Woodbine headliner, when he will run the favorites Miss Scarlett Road and Total Bliss in the 6 1/2-furlong Ontario-sired allowance for nonwinners of three.

Miss Scarlett Road defeated nonwinners-of-two Ontario-sired allowance stock by four lengths in her second outing of the year May 4. Sixteen days later, she was a stalking second behind gate-to-wire winner Blues Dancing in the seven-furlong Lady Angela Stakes.

Miss Scarlett Road was ineffective when she shortened up to five furlongs in another Ontario-sired stakes July 1, the Rainbow Connection on the grass at Fort Erie.

“I think five-eighths was too short for her,” said Attard. “Some horses have speed, but they don’t want to go short.”

Miss Scarlett Road wound up second as the favorite after racing prominently in a six-furlong allowance Aug. 3, when she registered a 57 Beyer Speed Figure. “She’s been doing good in the morning,” said Attard. “I didn’t even work her this time. I just let her gallop along a little bit.”

Patrick Husbands, who was aboard for Miss Scarlett Road’s last triumph, has the mount on the Tucci Stable homebred.

Total Bliss has also had a productive meet. She beat $25,000 maidens by disqualification May 19, and then doubled up in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance June 14, when she earned just a 48 Beyer Figure for covering the distance in 1:20.11.

Total Bliss really stepped it up in the Beyer department in her last two races, earning numbers that are around the Beyer par of 66 for this classification. She was second to the razor-sharp pacemaker Sour Grapes on the Polytrack on July 14, and was a flat third on the grass in another allowance most recently.

“She ran a good [last] race too,” said Attard. “I think she’s better on the Poly.”

Jesse Campbell takes over on Total Bliss, who is owned by her breeder, Martin Cherry.

Princess Pick checked in third behind Miss Scarlett Road after being hard-ridden Aug. 3. She was previously fifth on the grass in the Passing Mood Stakes, which came after back-to-back allowance scores on the Polytrack in the spring.

Flashy Episode was in good form before her last outing, during which she folded in the stretch after battling up front through honest fractions.

Rounding out the field are Moongoddess, Olivia’s Song, and White Road.
