ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Alpha Bettor saved ground under a good ride from Justin Stein en route to an upset score in the $200,000 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday.

Alpha Bettor ($29.60) raced in third along the backstretch in the Grade 2 route as Don Cavallo set lively fractions, with 1-5 favorite Delegation in close proximity. Alpha Bettor came along the rail in the stretch and prevailed by a neck over Delegation in a quick 1:42.69 for the 1 1/16 miles.

James Street rallied wide into contention on the far turn and seemed poised to go by the leaders, but he hung in the final furlong and finished a close third in the five-horse field.

“I had a perfect trip,” Stein said. “I did have to wait a little longer than I wanted to, but it worked out for the better. Once he got his head in front, he ran a game race. I could just feel him wanting to win.”

Making his first start of the year under the guidance of trainer Danny Vella, Alpha Bettor earned $120,000 for Bulldog Racing.
