Wood Memorial Day handle declines

Email

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Total all-sources handle on Saturday’s 12-race Wood Memorial program at Aqueduct was $15,841,220, down 12.5 percent from the 2014 figure of $18,117,037. Ontrack handle Saturday was $2,469,614, down 9.2 percent from last year’s figure of $2,718,962.

Reported attendance Saturday was 11,213, down 11.8 percent from last year’s figure of 12,719.

Saturday’s card had 12 races with 94 betting interests. Last year’s Wood card also had 12 races, with 99 betting interests. The all-stakes pick four Saturday handled $608,015, down 35 percent from last year’s handle of $928,877.

NYRA’s business could have been impacted by Keeneland moving its premier spring race, the Grade 1 Blue Grass, up a week from last year to coincide with the Wood and Santa Anita Derby.

Or the riot at the casino the night before...kept me away1

Didn't go to this year's Wood, because once again NYRA tried to rip off the regular customer. They upped the buffet in the Equestris to $75.00 per person. Used to be worth the drive, sadly, no more.

What they need to do is just shut down NY racing from November 1st until the end of March. Then they could run a three week meet at Aqueduct as a lead-in to the long summer grind, kind of like they do with Keeneland in Kentucky, just prior to the opening of Churchill Downs in the spring. The Wood Memorial could be the flagship race of the meet, just like the Bluegrass is at Keeneland and they could surround it with all of the other stakes races as they also do at Keeneland....then the NY crime bosses could all spend their winters down in south Florida betting the races at Gulfstream and smoking fat, Cuban cigars!

Agree wholeheartedly. It's time for NY winter racing to be consigned to the slag heap of history. Keep Aqueduct open for a few weeks in the spring and late fall for main track dirt and turf racing.

Why wouldn't it be down? The race itself offered a seven horse field with two hopeless long-shots and three serious contenders who were all 2-1 n the wagering. The Bayshore and the Carter were much more interesting races from a wagering standpoint and the Gazelle was unbettable. The rest of the card was the typical mishmash of NYRA racing with short fields and even shorter priced winners...until you got to the race that kicked off the P6 when they unloaded the bomb that knocked everyone out of the P6...very typical New York racing, which is why NYRA has been teetering on the verge of bankruptcy for what seems like forever!

Totally agree; Aqueduct is sinking past even being considered a borderline second-level track right before our eyes. Can anyone say 'Finger Lakes South'?

Oops. There goes kay's bonus.

place is a dump with racing as an after thought RIP

what makes it a "dump"???

Aqueduct has the charm of a big OTB parlor attached to a casino, the piecemeal addition of a few picnic tables and food trucks placed willy nilly on the apron did not add much to the supposedly festive aura surrounding their biggest day. Was Santa Anita's handle also impaired by the Blue Gras Stakes? Was the Blue Grass handle also impacted by having three Grade 1 Derby preps run on the same day? Perhaps Easer weekend played a part in the attendance and handle decline

A recent survey by "The Racing Journal" found that nearly 80% of bettors at Aqueduct would give the game up -- if they could, but are unable to do so because they are addicted. Perhaps, bettors wised up and simply stayed away because drug cheat Rudy was returning from suspension ( and promptly won two of the biggest races ) and Andy Serling was still "giving some love " to Jacobson.

pretty disturbing to my eyes no reason for this lower takeouts is the only answer parking and perograms u r out 10 bucks at the start it all adds up in the end after a winter of racing getting whacked like that

Still charge to park ? Admission too? Why is GP able to not charge for parking and admission ? They don't even track attendance , doesn't truly matter nowadays with all the betting accounts one is able to open ?
Jamie Murphy More than 1 year ago

Wood Memorial Day lacked any "Star Quality" I ignored the day in general. Mostly I found the 3 major races that day a snooze fest. The Kentucky Derby will be quite interesting though with all the horses who had easy times of it clashing with each other. Think about it. I am guessing in favorites role Dortmund 5-2 Carpe Diem and American Pharoah at about 3-1 or 7-2 Materiality and Upstart near 5-1 and 6-1 each Firing Line / Frosted / in the 8-1 to 10-1 line to start. Where to start Mubtaahij is about 15-1 Take value where you can get it. A well balanced Kentucky Derby with lots of speed. Looks like fun. Thats a

odds way too low only 2 horses will be below 6-1 Upsatrt wol be 15-1ish Materila... will be 12-1ish. Capre Diem 7-1. Firing line 20-1 ha ha ha.
LeslieH0101 More than 1 year ago
Exactly -- Upstart 25- 1?
Jamie Murphy More than 1 year ago
maybe everyone else in the field is 1000-1 lol
Kevin More than 1 year ago
That's some poor guessing on prices in a near 20 horse field...
Raymond Hackinson More than 1 year ago
I only bet the Wood The others looked they were given to the favorites Still, it time for a long shot to win the KD Despite their odds the favorites or near favorites have won the last few years
Allan Gauthier More than 1 year ago
I would guess 4 horses will be 4-1 5-1 And the favorite at no lower than 7/2
