Wise Dan pre-entered in Breeders' Cup Mile; won't run in Classic

Wise Dan will go into the BC Mile off this victory in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.

Wise Dan has been pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Mile, and will not be pre-entered in any other BC race, owner Morton Fink said on Wednesday from his home in Chicago.

Horses can be pre-entered in more than one BC race on Monday, but Fink said there was no chance Wise Dan would be pre-entered in the Classic, let alone even be considered to run in that race.

"I sent in my entry slip three days ago, and just put down the Mile," Fink said. "That's the only one we're running in."

Both the Mile and the Classic are Nov. 3 at Santa Anita.

While I think that Wise Dan is surely the best Miler in the US it does worry me that Lopresti didnt want the 3 races in 7 weeks and was overruled by the owner. He wanted to train Wise Dan up to this race. Horses have been known to come up empty. Just look at Stacelita or Turbulent Descent last year. Or the host of other favorites that didn't win last year. It makes me quite squeamish at a short price.

He'll be fine. Four weeks is plenty of time for a good horse to recover plus he's only racing a mile at a time. I doubt his last two took much out of him.

Wise Dan or Point of Entry for HOY if either wins their race. Wise Dan if they both win. More versatile ,more different tracks run at

If Ron The Greek or Game On Dude win the Classic they are Horse Of The Year no doubt. Turf horses shouldn't be HOTY in America because the competition is not as good on turf as it is on dirt. Wise Dan and Point of Entry are very good horses but they beat a bunch of nobodies and failed dirt horses in American turf races.

Nope,a very weak HCP division,with horses beating each other. Game On is a regional horse whose only foray out of Cal. led to a drubbing. RTG,I may agree with you there,as he has ran well and traveled all over the country.

If Game On Dude wins the Classic your kidding yourself if you don't think he'll win HOTY, regional horse or not. I'm not saying he should but he will. Also, you say the Handical division is weak this year. So your saying that the handicap turf division is better? I hate to break it to you but the turf division is weak this year too just like it is every year. Very weak Turf division too is it not? Do you really think the horses running on turf in America are better than the ones who run on dirt? No way, no how.

Id take Point Of Entry over Wise Dan. At least POE wins were at 1 1/2 miles. I'll take a horse who can go the distance over one who can't any day.

I like Wise Dan but with no wins over 1 1/8 miles and no wins on real dirt, part of me hopes he doesn't get Horse of the Year.

Brandon... Wise Dan won the Grade 1 Clark at Churchill in 2011 on real dirt.

we're talking Horse of the Year for 2012 so what he did last year is a moot point. Nobodys talking about last year when when talking about 2012 HOTY. It only matters what they did in 2012 so the Clark in 2011 doesn't count.

the idea is to run local ( US ) horses against the best EUROS in the most possible BC races there are.....GAME ON DUDE has already proven his mettle on the CLASSIC so let the others try other BC RACES like WISE DAN in the MILE......and POINT OF ENTRY in the other BC GRASS race he is in....these are 3 singles for me.....WISE DAN regressing on BC DAY come on man !!! he may lose but that is not regression, he simply lost !!!

good choice by the owner. they have a hot horse and they know it. agree with you on the 3 singles and will single those 3 in the pick 6 so as to keep my cost down.

Those three will pay eight dollars on a pik 3. If you single those three in a pick four you need a 100-1 to make a $100. If you single those three in the pik 6 you will still need 10k to cash.

What ever happened to the turf races for Wise Dan? Just a few weeks ago, his connections were confident in either the Turf Classic or the Turf Mile, and now, there is a 180 degree shift that surprise the heck of me. I thought he belongs in either of the turf races, but appearantly the connections don't think so; and opted to go the easy route.

To me, when they say BC Mile I assume it's the dirt mile and not the turf mile. They have always referred to the grace race for the mile as Turf Mile, but the article didn't say anything about turf. Anyhow, I now know it's the Turf Mile when they say BC Mile. I'm still learning.

No, actually they have always referred to the BC Mile as the BC Mile, the one on grass, that has existed since the very first BC in 1984. The BC Dirt Mile is called just that, and was initiated in 2007. And Wise Dan's connections never considered the BC Turf, the longer grass race.

This has the potential to be the most anticipated race of the weekend if some good Euros come and Animal Kingdom makes the gate along with the outstanding Wise Dan, not to mention some hard-knocking local horses.

Yeah, because he so often regresses off his top efforts? Really good horses don't regress so much, they are consistent. That is what defines them as really good, and frankly Wise Dan regression is still faster than most.
