The legendary mare Winx won her 24th consecutive race in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse outside of Sydney, Australia, setting a record of 17 Grade 1 or Group 1 wins by a flat horse. Winx eclipsed the previous mark of 16 Grade 1 wins held by John Henry, the American Horse of the Year in 1981 and 1984. The Irish hurdler Hurricane Fly won 22 Grade 1 races in England, Ireland, and France from 2008-15. Winx’s victory in the $770,000 George Ryder Stakes has intensified discussions that she could race in England at the world-famous Royal Ascot meeting in June. There are opportunities for a start in Australia in the short term, such as the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 14, a race Winx won in 2017. Winx won the George Ryder Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf by three-quarters of a length over 20-1 Happy Clapper. Winx, the 2-13 favorite with bookmakers, closed from the back of a field of six under jockey Hugh Bowman to take the lead in the final furlong. Happy Clapper has finished behind Winx seven times during the famous mare’s winning streak. This was the third consecutive year Winx has won the George Ryder Stakes. The 2016 running was the eighth win of her streak, while the 2017 running was the 16th win. Winx, a 6-year-old by Street Cry, is a two-time Australian Horse of the Year and has won 28 of 34 starts. Her last loss was a second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick Racecourse in April 2015. She is trained by Chris Waller for a partnership. Winx was the star of the Rosehill Gardens program but did not start in the day’s richest race. Estijaab won the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes for 2-year-olds, leading throughout the $1.54 million race at six furlongs. Sent off at 15-2 in the field of 16, Estijaab prevailed by a head over 16-1 Oohood. A filly, Estijaab was ridden by Brenton Avdulla for the training partnership of Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes. Estijaab, by Snitzel, won the Group 2 Riesling Stakes at Randwick on March 10 and was the fourth betting choice in the Golden Slipper. :: Get a FREE entry to The Championships DRF Tournament and win a VIP trip to Australia
