Winx extends winning streak in George Main Stakes


Winx, Australia’s leading horse, was the cozy winner of Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes at a mile on turf at Royal Randwick Racecourse outside of Sydney. The $373,300 George Main Stakes was the 11th consecutive win for Winx.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, Winx (1-11) closed from the back of a field of six to take the lead with a wide rally with more than a furlong remaining. Winx stretched her advantage to 1 1/4 lengths over 13-1 Hauraki in the final sixteenth.

Winx is unbeaten since April, 2015 and won her first start of the 2016-17 season in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes at Randwick on Aug. 20. A 5-year-old by Street Cry, Winx has won seven Group 1 races in her career. She is scheduled to have a busy October, with intended starts in the Caulfield Stakes on Oct. 8 and the Cox Plate on Oct. 22

Winx won the 2015 Cox Plate, Australia’s leading weight-for-age race.

Trained by Chris Waller for a partnership that includes Magic Bloodstock Racing, Winx has won 15 of 21 starts in her career.
