Winter Whiskey pulls upset in Swynford

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Winter Whiskey mowed down the fading speed under Jono Jones to post a big upset in Sunday's $134,250 Swynford Stakes at Woodbine

Winter Whiskey raced far off the dueling favorites, Estevan and San Diego Blowout, in the seven-furlong dash for 2-year-olds. He loomed into contention while four wide midway on the turn, and overhauled Estevan nearing the eighth pole before drawing off to prevail by three and a quarter lengths.

Organ Grinder, a 22-1 shot, beat Estevan by three-quarters of a length for second, while Third Day outran a staggering San Diego Blowout for fourth in the five-horse field. The final time was 1:25.08.

Jones' pre-race strategy couldn't have worked out any better. "I wanted to sit behind (the speed) and hope that they'd stop, and they did," Jones said.

Winter Whiskey, who is trained by Catherine Day Phillips, earned $80,550 for Ten Goal Racing Stable and partner.

With most of the show pool riding on San Diego Blowout, the race produced some large show prices. Winter Whiskey returned $22.60, $9.90 and $26.60 across the board. Organ Grinder paid $31.60 to show, while Estevan, the 4-5 favorite, returned $6.90.
