Wind Water wins Gregson Foundation Sprint

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Wind Water ($7) opened through fast early fractions and was never challenged in winning the $75,850 Gregson Foundation Sprint Stakes at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

Wind Water and Elegant Ice bumped at the break, but Wind Water quickly recovered to open by one length through a 21.99 opening quarter in the six-furlong stakes for 3-year-olds. He increased his margin at each call as he beat favored Family Guy by five lengths in 1:10.06.

"It's nice to be able to run your horse where he trains," winning trainer Brian Koriner said. "This was the only race for him this meeting. We tried him in the El Camino because we needed somewhere to run, and we wanted to see if he could route.

"We always did have a sprinter, but we might like to try him at a mile on turf.

The victory, worth $41,920, was Wind Water's fourth in 10 starts. The son of Bold Badgett scored his third stakes victory, increasing his career earnings to $170,640.

Koriner, who co-owns the gelding with Janet and William Lyons, said he would look at the $150,000 Golden Bear Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in two weeks even though undefeated Lost in the Fog is scheduled to run.
