Peter Winants, former editor and publisher of the equestrian magazine The Chronicle of the Horse, died Monday in Virginia at age 82.

A Maryland native, Winants saw the 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral and was a devoted follower of racing, particularly steeplechasing. He contributed articles and photographs to The Maryland Horse before joining The Chronicle of the Horse.

Winants wrote four books, including a history of American steeplechasing and volumes about champion chasers Jay Trump and Flatterer. He also was director of the National Sporting Library from 1991 until 1998.

Funeral services and burial were to be private.
