Win City takes Autumn

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Win City collared longshot Wicklow Highlands in deep stretch to capture the Grade 3, $163,800 Autumn Handicap at Woodbine on Saturday.

Wicklow Highlands led the way through splits of 23.93 seconds, 47.60, and 1:11.76 in the 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-olds and up. Win City raced well off the early lead, and was three lengths back of favored Kiss a Native on the backstretch.

Looming into contention on the far turn, Win City came wide into the stretch and out-kicked Kiss a Native in the final furlong, and then mowed down Wicklow Highlands to prevail by three-quarters of a length. Kiss a Native was another half-length back in third in the seven-horse field. The final time was 1:44.83.

"We had a great trip," said winning rider Constant Montpellier. "We were able to save ground on the first turn. I angled my way out, and when I asked him, he responded and ran them down."

Win City returned $5.30 as the second choice and earned $98,280 for owner Frank DiGiulio Jr. and trainer Bob Tiller.
