Win City Canadian Horse of the Year

Email

TORONTO, Ontario - It was business as usual for Sam-Son Farm, as the perennial powerhouse was a five-time winner at the 27th annual Sovereign Awards ceremony Friday evening.

But it was first-time winner Bob Tiller who stole the show before an audience of approximately 300 at the Four Seasons Hotel, taking home his first award as outstanding trainer and reveling in the spotlight as the trainer of Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male Win City and as the trainer and co-owner of champion 2-year-old male Rare Friends.

Win City, owned by Frank DiGiulio Jr., won six stakes at Woodbine this year and prevailed over Atto Mile winner Numerous Times and Labatt Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate winner Dancethruthedawn in a contentious Horse of the Year vote.

The balloting was conducted by the Jockey Club of Canada, which asked selected voters across Canada to list their first three choices in 16 categories with points assigned on a 4-2-1 basis. The finalists in those categories, excepting Horse of the Year, were announced Dec. 3.

Numerous Times, owned by The Committee Stable and trained by Sid Attard, was a handy winner in the turf horse category while Dancethruthedawn, owned by Sam-Son Farm and trained by Mark Frostad, was just one vote shy of being a unanimous winner in the 3-year-old filly division.

Sam-Son Farm, which was honored as outstanding owner for the seventh time and as outstanding breeder for the fourth time, also was represented by champion older filly Mountain Angel and outstanding broodmare Dance Smartly, dam of Dancethruthedawn.

Sid Attard and Roger Attfield also were represented by two Sovereign Award winners apiece as Attard trained both Numerous Times and 2-year-old filly champion Ginger Gold and Attfield conditioned the champion older horse A Fleets Dancer and the champion turf filly Sweetest Thing.

Ginger Gold races for the Jim Dandy Stable of Mel Lawson, while A Fleets Dancer is owned by Cam Allard and Sweetest Thing campaigns for the partnership of Attfield, Bill Werner and Mickey Canino.

Mr. Epperson, winner of three stakes races at Woodbine for his trainer and co-owner Scott Fairlie, had little trouble carrying the vote in the outstanding sprinter category.

Exciting Story, winner of Belmont's Grade 1 Met Mile in May, was the hard-luck horse of the Sovereign Awards as the second-place finisher in both the sprinter and older horse balloting.

Those deserving of special honorable mention also include Fancy As, the Western Canadian sensation who finished a fairly close second to Win City in the 3-year-old male vote and was fourth in the Horse of the Year balloting with 53 points.

Others who received points in the Horse of the Year voting were Exciting Story (25), A Fleets Dancer (23), Ginger Gold (5), Mr. Epperson (3), Mysterious Affair (2), Sweetest Thing (2), Highland Mood (1), and I'm Free (1).

Patrick Husbands, who finished second to Todd Kabel in races-won at Woodbine but was the leading rider in money-won, became the first jockey to win three straight Sovereign Awards. Chantal Sutherland, also based at Woodbine, was voted outstanding apprentice jockey.

Sovereign Awards also were presented in four media categories. Muriel Lennox was honored for outstanding feature story, Curtis Stock for outstanding newspaper story, Michael Burns Sr. for outstanding photograph and Tom Wolski for outstanding film/video/broadcast.
