Wilshire Handicap preview

April 25, 2007
Hollywood Park - Race 7
1 Mile (Turf)
Wilshire Handicap (Grade 3)
3-year-olds and upward, fillies and mares
Purse $100,000

WITCH WOMAN looks like the "other" Frankel horse in here with DOUBLE TROUBLE figuring to take the lion's share of the money, but she set the pace against quality fillies Balance and Ermine when overmatched on dirt in her last two races, and she was pressured throughout in a quickly-run turf allowance three back. She may shake clear in this spot, and is worth a play at the 15-1 morning line price.
Frankel is 46-143 (32% wins, 62% ITM, $2.09 ROI) over the past five years with first-time imports, and DOUBLE TROUBLE draws a comfortable inside post position for her North American debut. A Group 2 winner in her native Brazil, Double Trouble is riding a three-race win streak, receives Lasix for the first time, and should class up well with these. She may work out a wonderful pace-tracking, ground-saving trip. QUEMAR should get some pace to attack on Wednesday, and she enters this race in very good form. She finished third in the Grade 2 Las Palmas Handicap at this distance last fall, and should be running late. PRIVATE BANKING finished evenly behind stablemate CHARM THE GIANT in the Hillsboro Handicap at Bay Meadows, but may have been a bit short for her first start of the year. Expect her to be sharper for this, and she won over this course and trip in her second start off the layoff last June.
SINGALONG disappointed in the Santa Ana, but she has had plenty of success over this course in the past. A return to her best form makes her a threat, and she'll get some pace to run at in the lane. She must overcome a tough outside post, however. Charm the Giant has good tactical speed, but may be forced wide into the first turn. She has two wins over this course, and will turn back to her favorite distance.
