Multiple graded stakes winner Wildcat Red was named Florida’s 2014 Horse of the Year Monday night at the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association annual awards banquet and gala in Ocala, Fla. Wildcat Red, a son of D’Wildcat won 3 of 10 starts last year for earnings of $848,600, highlighted by victories in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, the Grade 3 Hutcheson Stakes, and the Quality Road Stakes, all at Gulfstream Park. His campaign, which also secured him Florida’s champion 3-year-old male honors, also included a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, third-place finishes in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby, and he competed in the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Jose Garoffalo trains Wildcat Red for owner Honors Stable Corp. He was bred on Florida by Xavier Moreau’s Moreau Bloodstock International and Wilson Winter’s Winter Racing Enterprise, both based in Ocala. His dam, the Grade 3-placed Miner’s Mark mare Racene, was named Florida’s Broodmare of the Year. Wildcat Red was her sixth foal and her sixth winner from seven foals to race, also including Jamaican champion Racing Machine. Wildcat Heir was posthumously named Florida’s Stallion of the Year, while With Distinction was honored as Florida’s Active Stallion of the Year. With Distinction, a 14-year-old son of Storm Cat, stands at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala. Kantharos, a 7-year-old son of Lion Heart, was honored as the state’s leading active freshman and juvenile sire. He stands at Ocala Stud. Thomas and Lori Fackler’s Best A Luck Farm was presented with the Needles Award as a small Thoroughbred operation that made outstanding contributions to the Florida Thoroughbred industry. The Ocala-based farm bred Dance With Fate, winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes. Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield Sales of Williston, Fla. was awarded the Joe O’Farrell Memorial Award, presented by Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co to the original consignor of the year’s best Florida-bred racehorse offered at public auction in Florida. Summerfield Sales handled Grade 2 winner El Kabeir, who sold to Zayat Stables for $250,000 at the 2013 OBS August yearling sale. Ocala Stud was named Florida’s Breeder of the Year for the fourth time in the last five years, leading the state’s breeders with $2,318,486 in earnings. The farm was represented as a breeder by Florida-bred graded stakes winner Asia Express and multiple graded stakes-placed Calculator, who was named Florida’s champion 2-year-old male.
