Wild Promises turns tables on Unspoken Word

Wild Promises ($5.20) wore down rival Unspoken Word in the final strides to win Bay Meadows's closing day $57,220 Mother's Day Handicap on Sunday.

The two, who were separated by a head when Unspoken Word won the one-mile Hillsborough Handicap on March 29, ran one-two the whole way before Wild Promises got her head in front in the final 70 yards. She won the 1 1/16-mile turf race by a neck in 1:43.06. Greetings was five lengths farther back in third.

Following trainer Greg Gilchrist's instructions masterfully, jockey David Lopez sat Wild Promises comfortably behind her primary rival, moved within a length at the quarter pole, and rallied outside her in the lane.

"I told David don't let [Unspoken Word] do what she did last time when she spurted away at the top of the lane. That's what made the difference," Gilchrist said.

Lopez said his 4-year-old filly was "very relaxed. We went after her on the turn, and my filly responded well."

Unspoken Word's jockey, Russell Baze, said his filly ran her race and dug in, but "she just wasn't capable of holding her off."

Wild Promises, earned by Harry Aleo, earned $33,000 for her first career stakes victory. Wild Promises, whose career record is 12-6-5-1, has now earned $189,750.
