Wild Bender eyes another stakes win

EDMONTON, Alberta - Wild Bender has drawn the rail in a bid to win her second straight stakes here in Friday's $50,000 Northlands Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at a mile.

A daughter of Alberta champion 3-year-old filly Wild Creek, Wild Bender is coming off a victory in the 1 1/16-mile Penny Ridge, which was moved to Northlands after the final day of the Calgary meet was flooded out. She will seek her third win of the season here with Rickey Walcott aboard.

Kathern's Cat drew the outside post in a field of nine and will look to shed her inconsistent ways. Kathern's Cat finished seventh in the six-furlong Mount Royal but rebounded three weeks later to win the Lilac at a mile. Then, as the 1-2 favorite in the Penny Ridge, Kathern's Cat faded in the stretch to be fourth. She will be ridden again by Quincy Welch.

Avenging Kat comes from Hastings with a 3-for-3 career record, including two stakes wins.

Another invader, stakes-placed Wautega Light, has a victory and two seconds this year at Assiniboia Downs.

Speedy Gone Sally, second in the Lilac and Penny Ridge, figures to be a threat under Perry Winters.

After running fourth in the Mount Royal, Seattle Salsa made an unsuccessful trip to Winnipeg for the six-furlong Chantilly, in which Wautega Light was second.

Left Swiftly, Nessarose, and Howsitgoin complete the field.
