Wide-open field of sprinters

A group of sharp runners meet in the Emerald Downs Friday feature.

The six-furlong $7,500 claimer includes the entry of Spitfire Slew, a winner of two of his past three, and Potrero Station, who has won two of his past four starts while hitting the board each time. The race also includes last-out winners Code Red and Woodland Breeze.

The entry appears tough with Spitfire Slew a likely pace factor. He won two straight against better earlier in the meet but faded late in a $12,500 claimer on Aug. 30 after seven weeks on the sidelines. He should be tighter Friday and is reunited with leading jockey Seth Martinez.

Potrero Station is a stalker who is going in good form but takes a step up from the $5,000 level, where he ran third after leading in the stretch of his last start on Aug. 31.

Code Red and Woodland Breeze both won on the drop last time and are quickly being moved back up the claiming ladder after those confidence-building wins.

Code Red picked up his first win of the year and sixth career win here with a wire-to-wire victory in a $3,500 starter on Sept. 4.

Woodland Breeze dropped from $12,500 to a $4,000 nonwinners-of-two while scoring a convincing victory last time.

Idabetabuck faded as the favorite on Aug. 30 in a $12,500 race that marked his first start in 11 months. He should run better with a race under his belt.
