Wide Mandate connects at 36-1 in Goodman

EmailARCADIA, Calif. - The upset win by Wide Mandate ($75.40) in Sunday's $94,675 Jack Goodman Stakes at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting was a good news/bad news situation for trainer Mel Stute.

Wide Mandate scored his first stakes win, and Stute had $4 to win, but he got blown out of a series of dime superfecta bets by third-place finisher Remember Boffi, an 11-1 longshot.

More importantly, Stute, and owners Archa Racing, have a colt that could return in the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile on Nov. 3.

Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Wise Mandate ran six furlongs in 1:08.42. He was third behind pacesetter Whatever Whenever for the first half-mile, took the lead with a three-wide move on the turn and won by 1 3/4 lengths over Guns on the Table, the 9-5 favorite.

A winner of 2 of 6 starts and $108,060, Wide Mandate ended a four-race stakes losing streak.
