Whatsthenameman wins Malcolm Anderson

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Whatsthenameman ($9.40) quickly burst into contention after breaking in midpack and easily won the $71,512 Malcolm Anderson Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

The 2-year-old colt beat Questionable World by three lengths in the 4 1/2-furlong stakes races, winning in 51.81 seconds.

"He's a quick little guy," winning trainer Frank Monteleone said. "I trained his mom (House Maid) when she set a track record for three furlongs at Turf Paradise."

Favored Kitty and Boo, a filly, set the early pace as Whatsthenameman rushed up inside her. When she drifted out a bit heading into the lane, Whatsthenameman cut the corner and assumed command, pulling away from the field.

"He's very green and very talented," winning jockey Danny Sorenson said. "When the talent and maturity come together, he should be a very nice colt."

The Cal-bred homebred has now won two of three starts. He earned $40,575 to increase his career earnings to $75,855. Monteleone said he would probably wait until Del Mar to run the gelded son of Muqtarib again.
