Whatsitgonnatake vs. older foes

Whatsitgonnatake, a 3-year-old, takes on older rivals, including defending champion My Sweet Sug, in Tuesday's $40,000 Florence Henderson Stakes at Indiana Downs. A 1 1/16-mile turf race, the Henderson has a field of 13 Indiana-bred fillies and mares, including an also-eligible.

Trained by Rebecca Maker, Whatsitgonnatake captured the $40,000 First Lady at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf here May 29. She returned to finish third, beaten 2 3/4 lengths, going a mile over a yielding turf course at Arlington Park on June 11.

While Whatsitgonnatake and My Sweet Sug are the only horses in the field who have won a turf stakes, Whatsitgonnatake is the only horse who has won an open stakes race, the Prairie Gold Lassie at Prairie Meadows last July. Overall, Whatsitgonnatake is 3-0-1 in six starts. Inosencio Diego, who rode Whatsitgonnatake in the First Lady, has the call Tuesday.

My Sweet Sug has not raced since Nov. 19, when she captured the Francis Slocum Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Hoosier Park.

She led gate to wire in last year's Henderson and scored by 3 3/4 lengths.

A 6-year-old who has won 6 of her 13 career starts, My Sweet Sug signaled she is ready for her return with a bullet six-furlong workout over the Polytrack at Turfway Park on June 16. My Sweet Sug will be ridden by Bill Troilo.
