Western Fair: Foiled Again takes the Molson Final the hard way

Foiled Again will start next in the Bettor's Delight at Tioga Downs.

Foiled Again showed his class by capturing the $300,000 Molson Pace at Western Fair while never seeing the pylons the entire mile.

Foiled Again was one of more than half the field that fired off the wings of the gate. But there were no spots along the pylons as Aracache Hanover made the front and Atochia settled in the pocket. Foiled Again was stuck on the rim. Luckily enough fellow leaver Razzle Dazzle elected not to keep his three-hole seat and provided an escort for Foiled Again.

The opening fraction was a brisk :26 3/5 and the half :55 3/5 as Aracache Hanover met heavy pressure from Razzle Dazzle off the third bend in the four-turn mile. Razzle Dazzle came to play and edged past the leader after three quarters in 1:23 1/5. But Foiled Again loomed just to his outside and his stablemate Clear Vision was also tracking the pair.

In the final stages it was the gritty Foiled Again who edged to the front over a rallying Clear Vision. Razzle Dazzle was a good third in the 1:51 3/5 final clocking.

Foiled Again’s regular pilot Yannick Gingras gave all the credit for the victory to his ride for the night.

“I didn’t think I gave him that good of a drive,” said Gingras. “I got looped out of the gate, but I knew that Razzle Dazzle is a good horse and would take me where I had to go.”

The 8-year-old Foiled Again, who won the Molson Pace in 2011, added $150,000C to his career bankroll, which stands about $200k short of $4 million. Whether or not this will be his last season of racing is undecided, but Gingras is enjoying the ride.

“I know the end is closer than the start, but he shows up every start and puts in big efforts,” Gingras concluded.

Trainer Ron Burke confirmed via Twitter that Foiled Again will start next in the Bettor’s Delight at Tioga Downs on June 10.
