Welch winning in bunches

EDMONTON, Alberta - After winning four races last Saturday to take the lead in the Northlands Park jockey standings, Quincy Welch is riding a hot streak heading into Wednesday's program. He seeks his second straight victory aboard C R Jag in the featured seventh race, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for $30,000 claimers.

Welch will be riding for trainer Dale Saunders, who claimed C R Jag out of a winning effort versus similar company here June 30.

C R Jag, a 4-year-old gelding, drew post 6 in a field of seven older horses, and his mid-pack running style appears well suited to this sprint, which attracted speedsters Frontier Express and Summer Sensation.

On Sunday, Welch guided favored Fuhrever Dancing ($4) to a 1 3/4-length victory in the $50,000 Westerner for trainer Terry Jordan. The runner-up, Test Boy, was compromised by a wide trip in the field of just four older runners.

The most lucrative of Welch's wins on Saturday came in the 2-year-old colts and geldings division of the $60,000 Sales Stakes aboard Rock Creek Bobby ($2.40), who was a seven-length winner under a hand ride in the lane.

It was the second straight romp for Rock Creek Bobby, who is trained by Dale Saunders and was timed in 1:18.20 for 6 1/2 furlongs.

In the 2-year-old filly Sales Stakes, Jazzy Song came from last to first to win by 2 1/2 lengths over Fun Runner in 1:20.40 under jockey Shannon Beauregard.
