'Weisner' eyes second stakes win

Magic Weisner, the 2001 Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes winner, headlines a field of seven Maryland-bred 3-year-olds in the $60,000 restricted Goss Stryker Stakes at Laurel Park Saturday.

A three-time winner in his six-race career, Magic Weisner will try to fend off a powerful entry from trainer Anthony Dutrow in the seven-furlong race, as well as The Sewickley Kid, a four-length winner of a one-other-than allowance in his last start.

The more accomplished half of the Dutrow entry is War Native, the winner of the $60,000 Rollicking Stakes for statebreds at Laurel in December. In his most recent start, War Native was third in the open Fred Capposella Stakes on Jan. 21 at Aqueduct.

War Native was the 1-2 favorite in the Maryland Juvenile Championship, but Magic Weisner used a powerful late run to overtake him early in the stretch at odds of 12-1.

The Sewickley Kid, who is also entered in Saturday's Whirlaway at Aqueduct, has posted back-to-back 80-plus Beyers in his last two starts, including a maiden win on Dec. 12. He won by 4 1/2 lengths in his last start Jan. 5 despite racing on his left lead for the stretch of the 1 1/16-mile race.

Star Slugger, Majestic Sir, and Captain Chessie complete the field.
