Weatherstorm goes for third straight

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Weatherstorm will try to make it three in a row when he faces nine other statebred colts and geldings Tuesday in the $50,000 Michigan Breeders' Cup Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile stakes at Great Lakes Downs.

The 4-year-old Weatherstorm, the reigning Michigan horse of the year, captured the Wolverine Stakes in June and then won an allowance on July 9. He will carry high weight of 122 pounds and give from one to six pounds to his Tuesday rivals. Weatherstorm, trained by Dr. Bob Gorham, will be ridden by the meet's leading rider, Freddie Mata.

Weatherstorm, a Michigan champion at 2 and 3, has won 10 of 13 starts locally.

Gorham also has two other uncoupled entries, the Henry Mast-owned pair of Rockem Sockem and Shoot with Pride. Past Michigan horse of the year Rockem Sockem, the leading money earner in the field with $441,237, rallied late to be fourth in the Wolverine. Although he has won 10 of 31 lifetime, the 6-year-old Rockem Sockem is just 1 for 10 the past two seasons.

Its His Time won this race last year and was third as the favorite in the Wolverine in his only start this season. He had trouble that day, stumbling at the start and then having to come five wide around the far turn. Mike Allen will ride for his father, trainer Ronnie Allen.

Allen has also entered the stakes-winning Dorthys Champ, who was used up in a speed duel and faded to seventh in the Wolverine.
