Weather cuts Churchill short

Perilous weather conditions that brought tornados into the immediate area forced Churchill Downs to cancel the last six races of its 10-race Sunday card. Among the canceled races was the $150,000 Dogwood Breeders' Cup Stakes, a Grade 3 race Churchill most likely will make up on Saturday.

Although Churchill ran the first four races Sunday without incident, a tornado warning forced the remainder of the card to be canceled. Tornados actually touched down in several areas throughout the region, causing major property damage and at least one death.

Churchill's racing secretary, Doug Bredar, said the six races most likely would be made up by "adding a race here and there" by the time the spring meet ends on July 4.

Churchill officials said the cancellation was its first since June 6, 1990, when a card was canceled after three races because of weather.
