Wayzata Bay gets up

Wayzata Bay ($5.40) overcame an eventful trip to narrowly prevail Monday in the $45,000 Minneapolis Stakes.

Sent postward as the 8-5 favorite in the field of six older horses, Wayzata Bay stalked the pacesetting duo of Tepexpan and Bobadieu through fractions of 46.22 seconds and 1:10.16. On the far turn, late-breaking Kingsfield joined the leaders with a rush to take a narrow lead. As the leaders raced into the stretch, the early move took its toll and Kingsfield drifted out while Tepexpan shook clear of the field.

Wayzata Bay had found his best stride despite being carried out a bit by Kingsfield and just collared the pacesetter on the wire to prevail, completing the one mile and 70 yards in 1:40.34. Kingsfield finished third, a half-length behind the top pair.

Carlos Montalvo rode the winner for trainer Judi Hicklin, who indicated after the race that Wayzata Bay may be pointed for the Hawthorne Gold Cup.

* Minnesota-bred Glitter Star ($9) bested five other mares to capture the $45,000 Shakopee Stakes. Stalking the pace of Tens Holy Spirit and Turbulent Thinking, Glitter Star ranged up on the pair midway through the far turn while still in hand. Under some sharp encouragement from rider Seth Martinez, Glitter Star kicked clear at the top of the stretch and prevailed over late-running Dynabin by 1 1/2 lengths. Tens Holy Spirit lasted for third, another three lengths behind Dynabin. Glitter Star completed the one mile and 70 yards on a fast track in 1:41.25.
