Wave Carver seeks slot in derby

Governor's Cup Derby winner Wave Carver and 2005 champion 2-year-old Higher Fire head the three trials to the Grade 1, $700,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby on Friday evening.

Wave Carver has developed into a premier 3-year-old at Los Alamitos with a win in the Grade 2 Governor's Cup and seconds in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and the Grade 1 Golden State Derby. Those two runner-up finishes are his only defeats from six 2006 starts.

Higher Fire, looking for her first 2006 victory after four tries, comes off an encouraging effort in which she finished third behind Apollitical Time in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Handicap. Apollitical Time returned to win the Grade 1, $200,000 Los Alamitos Championship last Saturday night.

In 2005, Higher Fire earned more than $1.2 million with Grade 1 wins in the Ed Burke Million and the Golden State Million.

Other top prospects attempting to qualify for the derby are two-time futurity winner Finding Nemo, Los Alamitos Million winner Value the Man, and El Primero Del Ano Derby winner Volcom.

FDD Dynasty chases bonus

Ed Burke Million Futurity winner FDD Dynasty attempts to take the next step towards the $1 million Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza when he starts in the trials to the Grade 1 Golden State Million on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

The Cash Bonanza is awarded to the connections of any horse who can sweep the Ed Burke, Golden State, and Los Alamitos millions.

FDD Dynasty is undefeated in three starts, capped by his three-quarter length win in the Ed Burke Million on June 24. In the Ed Burke, he defeated Blues Girl Too and No Secrets Here, who went on to win the Grade 1, $1.9 million All American Futurity.

Trainer Mike Joiner rested FDD Dynasty after the Ed Burke win to point the colt at the Golden State Million and the Los Alamitos Million. He showed he is ready to return to racing with a sharp 17.70-second work for 350 yards on Oct. 3.

Blues Girl Too was second by three-quarters of a length in the Ed Burke, and she is also making her first start since that Grade 1 futurity. She also recorded a 17.70-second work for 350 yards.

Check This Runner comes into the trials after finishing second by a nose in the Grade 1 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. He was also second in the Grade 1 Kindergarten.

The promising Jess You and I is looking to qualify for his first futurity after winning a conditioned allowance race in 15.17 for 350 yards, the fastest time for the distance ever by a 2-year-old at Los Alamitos.
