Watchyourownbobber gives Lanerie second stakes win of card in Speaker's Cup

A trip to the Caribbean late last winter did Watchyourownbobber a world of good.

Watchyourownbobber went to Barbados in early March, and between tropical drinks and sunning on the beach found time to finish second in the Barbados Gold Cup. And since coming back to the U.S., Watchyourownbobber has won two six-figure stakes, including a hard-fought three-quarter-length victory over Rose Brier on Saturday at Mountaineer in the $100,000 West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker's Cup.

Trained by Mike Maker for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Watchyourownbobber tracked the fast early pace of 80-1 shot M C Squared before taking over on the second bend of the two-turn grass race. Rose Brier shadowed his every move, came at him hard through the stretch run, but could not push past. The favored Pleuven got a good pocket trip but could not take advantage, finishing third.

Watchyourownbobber, with Corey Lanerie winning his second stakes on the card, paid $9.40 and ran one mile and 70 yards on firm, fast-playing turf in 1:37.63, just .42 of a second off the course record.

The Ramseys claimed Watchyourownbobber for $50,000 late in his 2-year-old season of 2014. They risked him once for that tag last year, but Watchyourownbobber wasn’t taken and has turned into a listed-turf stakes stalwart, winning or coming close in his last five such races. The 4-year-old Watchyourownbobber, a winner in 6 of 15 races, is by Hard Spun out of the Mr. Greeley mare Boodles.
