Warren’s Flyer back with statebreds for Cal Breeders' Champion

Warren’s Flyer, who just missed in the California Cup Juvenile Fillies before taking on Turbulent Descent in the Moccasin Stakes, returns to face statebreds in the filly division of the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, the supporting feature on Monday.

Seven 2-year-old fillies were entered in the seven-furlong race, the seventh on the card.

Jorge Gutierrez, the trainer of Warren’s Flyer, said he believes this distance, and competition, are right in his filly’s wheelhouse. In the Cal Cup, Warren’s Flyer just failed to last 1 1/16 miles.

“That was her first time around two turns. She just came up short,” Gutierrez said. “Then I ran her a little too quick back in the Moccasin. That was a tougher race.”

The Moccasin came three weeks after the Cal Cup. Warren’s Flyer has been off five weeks since the Moccasin.

California Nectar, the Cal Cup runner-up, and Teddy’s Promise, an easy allowance winner last time out at Hollywood Park, are among the main contenders in the California Breeders’ Champion.

Bathing Beauty will try different tactics in this race, trainer Cliff Sise Jr. said.

“She was too close last time,” Sise said. “I want to take her back.

“She’s by Benchmark, and I think they are better on dirt than synthetics. And she’s out of a Flying Paster mare, so she should like the mud if it rains.”
