Warleigh wins Louisiana Downs Handicap

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Warleigh successfully defended his title in the $150,000 Louisiana Downs Handicap Sunday afternoon, taking command in the second turn from early pacesetter Yessirgeneralsir then holding off a late charge from Waupaca. Gentlemen J J reported home third followed by Sea Dub.

Owned by Ro Parra and trained by Steve Asmussen, Warleigh ($8.60) wired ten rivals in winning last year?s edition of the LAD ?Cap but Donnie Meche placed him just behind the early leader this year. After collaring that foe early in the far turn, Warleigh enjoyed a daylight advantage past the furlong marker. Waupaca was running well at the time but simply ran out of real estate to come up half a length short. The winning time for the mile and a sixteenth over a Franks Turf Course rated as good was 1:43.51.

In winning for the tenth time in 26 lifetime starts, Warleigh earned $90,000 for his winning connections. The 6-year-old son of Lord At War has now earned over $605,000 in his career and won for the first time since accounting for the rich $200,000 J B. Conley Breeders? Cup at Sam Houston Park back in April.
