GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Wally's Choice returned from a six-month layoff with a sharp performance to take Saturday's $100,000 by a widening 2 1/2 lengths under Ken Shino.

The Bosselman/Gus Fonner is the showpiece event of Fonner Park's 38-day meet, which will wind up its season on Kentucky Derby Day.

Wally's Choice, the 5-2 second favorite in the field of eight, found his way through traffic on the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, ran down upset-minded 20-1 shot Motion Approved in upper stretch, and charged home for the win in 1:47.40 over a sealed track rated good.

Trained by Mike Biehler, Wally's Choice returned $7.20 and keyed a 6-7 exacta with Motion Approved worth $115.60. Wally's Choice, a Minnesota-bred owned by the partnership of Joyce and Wally McNeil and Curtis Sampson, earned $60,000 and boosted his career bankroll to over $400,000 with his 12th career win in 25 starts. A year ago he earned stakes victories in the Blair's Cove and Minnesota Classics Championship at Canterbury Park.

Stormy Business checked in third, 4 3/4 lengths behind Motion Approved, while 9-5 favorite Habaneros lacked a solid rally and checked in fourth, another three lengths back.
