Wallace Station wins Don K Handicap


Wallace Station captured the second leg of the $16,000 Don K Memorial Starter Handicap series for older horses on the turf Tuesday. The second leg of the five-race series was contested at 1 1/16 miles, which Wallace Station covered in 1:48.49 as the 2-1 second choice in the field of eight. He was ridden by Victor Lebron and returned $6.60.

Trained by Earl Murphy, Wallace Station was second, beaten a half-length, going a mile in the first leg of the series on May 13 as Dusty Ol' Cognac turned in a $43 upset. The third race in the series will be Juneo10 at a mile. The series concludes on July 8 at 1 3/8 miles.

* Orlando Mojica won four races on Monday's Memorial Day card and continues to lead the way in the rider standings as of Wednesday with a 41-33 edge over Lebron. The 54-day meet reaches its halfway point Saturday. Lebron, last year's leading rider here, scored a riding triple on last Saturday's card.

Gary Patrick and Kim Hammond have slipped past defending champion Ralph Martinez in the trainer standings. Patrick leads the way with 12 wins, while Hammond, who saddled a double on Tuesday's card, is tied with Martinez at 11. Barb McBride, Tracey Wisner, and George Leonard are just behind with 10 wins each.
