Wait a While takes San Gorgonio

ARCADIA, Calif. - Odds-on favorite Wait a While reestablished her affinity for the Santa Anita turf course Monday, outclassing four rivals in the Grade 2, 1 1/8-mile San Gorgonio Handicap for fillies and mares. Garrett Gomez rode Wait a While ($2.60) to victory by 1 1/2 lengths over Lavender Sky. It was 4 1/4 lengths back to third-place finisher Sohgol. Costume and Hucking Hot completed the order of finish.

Todd Pletcher trains Wait a While, who won for the 10th time from 20 starts. Though still early in the year, Pletcher emphasized the significance of the location.

"We're excited the Breeders' Cup is here," Pletcher said of Santa Anita.

Wait a While's long-range goal is the BC Filly and Mare Turf on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita, where she is now 2 for 2. A 5-year-old mare owned by Alan Cohen's Arindel Farm, Wait a While won the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon in 2006 in her only other start at Santa Anita.

Pletcher said Wait a While would remain in California and run March 23 in the Grade 2 Santa Ana Handicap, then return to the East for a summer campaign aimed toward the Grade 1 Diana Handicap at Saratoga. Pletcher said Wait a While would return to California in fall, presumably to prep in the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon before her career finale in the BC Filly and Mare Turf.

* On Sunday, Pletcher won the 2,000th race of his training career when On the Virg ($12.80) won the eighth race here.
