Wagering comes to Gulfstream mall

Email

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – For the first time since the Village at Gulfstream Park opened adjacent to the racetrack five years ago, wagering will become available inside the mall with the opening of Frankey’s Sports Bar on Tuesday night.

Frankey’s was designed and is owned by track owner Frank Stronach and is the first of the three establishments he’ll operate at the mall, along with Adena Springs Steakhouse and a gourmet market.

“Before the mall was built, this property was all one simulcast site,” said Stronach. “Although we met with some resistance at first to offering wagering inside the mall, all we’ve really done is resurrect that concept by offering the same wagering product from the same wagering machines that we have inside the racetrack. This is one way we hope to educate the industry as a way to develop new fans. Ultimately, our goal is to have every restaurant facility in the Village showing the races and taking wagers on our product.”

actually, savvy real estate development could be the savior (rather than death knell) of race tracks... rather than close them for real estate value (Bay Meadows, Hollywood), you can also develop around the cachet, theme, and prestige of the track. it could be the centerpiece of very high end real estate, shopping, lifestyle, etc... I'd pay more for a house where I could see the track than golf course (rather see majestic thoroughbreds out the window all day than geriatric old men in funny clothes)... you name all the streets after eclipse winners, have stalls as well as garages, riding trails, etc... green spaces... rings for jumpers, show competition, etc...

why don't we have the same thing at the Santa Anita Mall which is right next to the SA Racetrack?? If Mr Stronach can do it in FL, he sure can do the same in CA>

He doesn't own the Westfield Mall. It's completely separate from the racetrack property.

Brilliant idea as you spend on food and drink and don't miss a beat betting. Most gamblers don't even look at the horses in the paddock. Nice thinkng frank

The mall was going to bring in new fans to racing. Then, it turned around to being the racetrack bringing in customers to the mall. And now he is trying to merge the two operations. Frank is persistent though.

That's another brilliant move by Stronach...instead of getting people to actually visit the track to see live racing even if it is just a race or two, let's set up a wagering place just outside of the track...and worst it is a place that Stronach owns...that really will get people to visit the track....one step forward - two steps backward...

Let me play devil's advocate. What if someone visits the mall and bets the races, wins a few bucks, and this is what makes them want to go to the track to see it live? Stronach owns GP so I don't get the comment about him owning the mall.

Live is old school . Very few people care what the horse even looks like. I'm shocked that people don't even know what the jockeys look like. The day of internet betting is here. More handle is on races are no longer at the live track. Just look at the mutuel pools . It's peanuts at the live venue. OTB tried this in NY with the bar restaurant wagering and bars and tenders made a killing until OTB closed. Idiots
