Voz de Colegiala upsets

Voz de Colegiala pulled an upset in Wednesday's $82,850 Osuintas Handicap for fillies and mares at Del Mar, benefiting from a bad trip by the heavily favored Etoile Montante.

Voz de Colegiala ($23.20) finished a half-length in front of Makeup Artist, who was a half-length in front of Shalini. Etoile Montante, a Group 1 winner in France last year, finished fourth, losing by a length. Etoile Montante was stuck in traffic behind the front-runners turning for home and failed to make up substantial ground when clear in the final furlong.

Ridden by Tyler Baze for trainer Ron McAnally, Voz de Colegiala finished 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:41.15. She was was fourth early and rallied three wide on the final turn to reach contention.

"She can't be too far off the pace. She doesn't have a big kick," said Dan Landers, assistant to McAnally.

The Osunitas was Voz de Colegiala's first stakes win since a Group 2 in Chile in October 2002. She was purchased by Nelson Bunker Hunt and sent to California in the winter of 2002-03.

The Osunitas was the fourth stakes win for Voz de Colegiala, who has won 7 of 22 starts and $149,419.

A 5-year-old, Voz de Colegiala will be pointed to the Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap on turf here on Sept. 4
