Volponi to stand at Hopewell

Volponi, winner of the 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic, will enter stud at Rick and Liz Trontz's Hopewell Farm in Midway, Ky., in 2004. He will stand for $10,000.

Volponi, a 5-year-old Cryptoclearance horse, was retired earlier this week with a record of 31-7-12-5 and earnings of $3,187,232. He last raced in the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup Classic in an attempt to defend his 2002 title in the race, but he finished last in a rare out-of-the money finish.

P. G. Johnson, who trained Volponi and co-owned him with his family's Amherst Stable and Spruce Pond Stable, said in announcing the horse's retirement that the Amherst and Spruce Pond partnership would retain 10 percent of Volponi at stud.

Volponi's graded stakes victories included a 6 1/2-length score in the 2002 Classic as well as wins in the 2002 Poker Handicap, 2001 Pegasus Handicap, and 2000 Pilgrim Stakes. He also was runner-up in eight graded races, including the Whitney and Suburban handicaps this year

Bred by the Johnson family, Volponi is out of the Sir Harry Lewis mare Prom Knight.
