Volponi juices BC futures

Future betting on the Breeders' Cup this year was a mixed bag. The bets were frequently the object of controversy after late scratches, and betting handle seemed to reflect the uncertainty of the wagering public over the format and choices in the new wager. Still, some players had rewarding glimpses of foresight: Orientate, winner of the Sprint, paid $32.80 in the first pool, compared with $7.40 on Breeders' Cup Day, and High Chaparral, winner of the Turf, paid $13.40, compared with $3.80. The field took four of the 11 pools, two of them because of Volponi's longshot win in the Classic. In the Juvenile, bettors who took Vindication in late September actually got paid less than on Breeders' Cup Day, $9.40 to $10.20.
